YouTube Thumbnail Size Guide: Dimensions, File Size and Format
By Elhano Creator Tools editorial team · Published 26 October 2026
Thumbnail size advice online is often out of date. YouTube updated its recommendations, and they now differ for videos and Shorts. Here are the current official specs from YouTube's custom thumbnail help page (checked 26 October 2026), plus practical advice on designing thumbnails that work at small sizes.
The official specs
| Videos | Shorts | |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended resolution | 3840 × 2160 px | 2160 × 3840 px |
| Minimum | 640 px wide | 640 px tall |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 | 9:16 |
| Formats | Image formats such as JPG or PNG | |
| File size | Up to 2 MB when uploading from mobile; up to 50 MB from desktop | |
YouTube says the thumbnail “should be as large as possible”, because it's also used as the preview image in the embedded player. Podcast playlists use a 1:1 square instead.
What about 1280 × 720?
1280 × 720 was the long-standing recommendation and is still a perfectly usable 16:9 size: it's above the minimum, and it's small enough to stay under 2 MB as a JPG. If your design tool or workflow is set up for it, there's no need to panic. But if you're creating new templates, 3840 × 2160 gives YouTube the most detail to work with on large screens. Both are exactly 16:9, so you can design at one and export at the other.
Shorts thumbnails and the 4:5 crop
For Shorts, upload a 9:16 thumbnail from the Shorts tab in YouTube Studio. YouTube also notes that vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail get an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages. Keep faces and text near the centre of vertical designs so they survive cropping.
Designing for small screens
Most people see your thumbnail at a fraction of its real size: in search results, in the suggested sidebar and on phones. A thumbnail that looks great at full size can be unreadable there. Some practical rules:
- One focal point. A face, an object or a result. Not five.
- Three or four words of text, at most. If you need more, the title can carry it.
- Strong contrast between subject and background, and between text and its backing.
- Leave the bottom-right corner clear. The video length is overlaid there.
- Test at small size. Shrink your design to about 200 pixels wide. If you can't tell what it is, simplify.
- Be accurate. Thumbnails must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines, and a thumbnail that misrepresents the video breaks the spam and deceptive practices policy.
Exporting at the right size
Our social media image resizer has presets for 1280 × 720, 3840 × 2160 and 2160 × 3840. It crops or fits your image in the browser, without uploading it, and exports JPG, PNG or WebP. If a 4K JPG is too heavy for a mobile upload, lower the quality slider or export at 1280 × 720.
Getting an existing thumbnail
Need the current thumbnail of a video, for example to redesign it or use it in a video essay with permission? The YouTube thumbnail downloader shows every size YouTube serves for a video. Remember that thumbnails belong to the creator; downloading one doesn't give you the right to reuse it.
Pair it with the title
Thumbnail and title are read together. Don't repeat the same words in both. Use the title checker to make sure your title's key words appear early.
Quick reference
- Video: 16:9, recommended 3840 × 2160, minimum 640 px wide. 1280 × 720 still works.
- Shorts: 9:16, recommended 2160 × 3840, minimum 640 px tall.
- JPG or PNG. Under 2 MB from mobile, 50 MB from desktop.
