YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste a video link to see every thumbnail size YouTube has for it, then download the one you need.

Works with watch, Shorts, embed, live and youtu.be links.

Paste a link above and the thumbnails appear here.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Copy the video's link from the address bar or the Share button. Shorts links work too.
  2. Paste it into the box above. The thumbnails load straight away.
  3. Pick a size from the list, then choose Download, or open the image in a new tab.

Which sizes are available?

YouTube stores a set of standard images for each video. The tool asks for all of them and marks the ones that don't exist.

SizePixelsAvailable
Maximum resolution1280 × 720Only for some videos
Standard definition640 × 480Only for some videos
High quality480 × 360Every video
Medium quality320 × 180Every video
Default120 × 90Every video

The 640 × 480 and 480 × 360 images are 4:3, so a widescreen video shows black bars at the top and bottom. When the 1280 × 720 version is missing, it usually means the original upload or custom thumbnail was low resolution. YouTube now recommends creators upload 3840 × 2160 thumbnails, but the public image sizes above top out at 1280 × 720.

Good uses for a downloaded thumbnail

  • Recovering your own thumbnail when the original design file is lost.
  • Studying competitors' thumbnails: layout, text size, faces and colour.
  • Adding a video preview to a blog post, slide deck or client report that links back to the video.
  • Checking how your thumbnail looks at small sizes before you publish a redesign.

Copyright and fair use

A thumbnail belongs to the person who made the video. Downloading one for reference or commentary is common, but reusing someone else's thumbnail as your own, or in advertising, can break copyright law and YouTube's rules. Ask the creator when in doubt. This tool only fetches images YouTube already shows publicly; it can't reach private or deleted videos.

Which size should you pick?

YouTube stores several copies of each thumbnail. The largest, often called maxres, is 1280 × 720 when the creator uploaded a large enough image. Older or low-resolution uploads may only have the smaller sizes (such as 640 × 480 or 480 × 360), which include black bars because they use a 4:3 frame. If a large size is missing, it simply doesn't exist for that video.

Example: redesigning your own thumbnail

  1. Paste your video's URL and download the largest version available.
  2. Open it in your editor next to the new design and compare them at small size (about 200 px wide), the way most viewers see them.
  3. Export the new one at 16:9 with the image resizer, then upload it in YouTube Studio.
  4. Watch the impressions click-through rate in Analytics over the next few days.

For current dimensions and file-size limits, see the YouTube thumbnail size guide.

Respecting copyright

Thumbnails are the creator's work. Downloading one for reference, for your own videos, or with permission is fine; reusing someone else's thumbnail as your own is not. If you're discussing a video, link to it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no 1280 × 720 version?

YouTube only creates the maximum-resolution image when the uploaded video or custom thumbnail is large enough. Older and low-resolution uploads often don't have one. The tool shows “Not available” instead of a blank grey image.

Does it work for YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ link. Shorts use the same image sizes as regular videos, so the images are landscape even though the Short is vertical.

Can I download thumbnails from private or deleted videos?

No. If YouTube doesn't serve the image publicly, the tool can't get it either.

The download opened a new tab instead of saving. Why?

Some browsers block downloads from another website. When that happens the image opens in a new tab: right-click it, or long-press on a phone, and choose Save image.

Do you store the links I paste?

No. The video ID is read in your browser, and the image comes straight from YouTube's servers. See the privacy policy.

What size should my own thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 at 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 px. The image resizer has both 1280 × 720 and 3840 × 2160 presets.

Why does the HD version show an error?

The video doesn't have a thumbnail at that size, usually because the original upload was smaller. Use the largest size that loads.

Does this work for Shorts?

Yes. Paste a Shorts URL and the tool reads the video ID the same way.
